Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.

Last night I sent negative emotions and thoughts from 2009 up in flames.

Literally.

After ringing in the new year with at my friend Ambers's house, I made the trek to my friend Derek's house to catch up with that group of friends.  I opened the door to his front stairwell and smelled sage and burning paper; I knew they were having a ritualistic burning of negative things, and I was looking forward to it.  And burn I did.  I wrote down my darkest thoughts and feelings from the year on bits of paper and burned them in a large bowl with candles and salt.  Derek had saged his house earlier in the night, and the sage was left there next to bowl for good measure. Negativity, up in flames.  I held each piece of paper and watched it burn, letting go just before it got to my finger tips.  While it watched the paper smolder, fire eating up the words I wrote, I imagined those things burning away inside me as well.  Feathery bits of ash fell into the bowl, piling atop my friends' from earlier in the evening.  I pushed the collective ashes of our pain around the bowl, mixing it with salt, and felt lighter.

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.

I have many personal resolutions for the new year, and frankly, I think it will be a good one.  Here's to a positive, productive, and healthy 2010.
