Toasted Nori Crisps a.k.a. Seaweed Crack

This post will be unusually short and sweet. There's no real story here, no tale of glee or woe or self discovery. Nope, this post is just snack food, pure and simple.
These are light, airy, crispy, salty, and aromatic. They are so quick to prepare that they give almost instant gratification, something that rarely happens when you eat like we have to eat. Oh yeah, and the are completely and totally addictive. Therefore, I am giving them the alternative name of Seaweed Crack. One bite and you're hooked. If you have any hesitancy about eating seaweed, these tempting little things will turn you right around and get you on track to being a serious seaweed-eater. It is like a gateway drug to the world of sea vegetables.
After making and promptly devouring the first batch, you'll want to make another batch. And if you're like me, you probably will. And then you'll devour that one too.
Don't say I didn't warn you.
you can't eat just one...i mean it
Toasted Nori Crisps a.k.a. Seaweed Crack
no measurements - make as much or as little as you want
nori seaweed sheets
toasted sesame oil
sea salt
Preheat oven to 400º F. Using a basting brush (or your fingers if you don't have one) lightly coat both sides of a sheet of nori with sesame oil, then sprinkle with sea salt. Place oiled nori directly on oven rack and bake for 10 minutes, until crispy and just starting to brown. Remove from the oven, let cool, then break into pieces or slice with a pizza cutter (my preferred method). Eat.
Notes: You can mess around with this a million ways. Try other seasonings - garlic powder is awfully tasty. If you are allergic to sesame, you could use any other oil and it will work just as well. Get creative, and go crazy.

Wow! This looks like it will become an instant favorite! Thanks for posting! Will be trying some asap! Too bad I don't have any nori seaweed sheets left...used them all up making sushi for the first time. Yum!
Seaweed crisps sound like the perfect snack food. I love this idea!
Definitely crack! :) My litle 2 year old can eat buckets of this stuff!

Nori chips have been on my to-do list for a while now. I tried a sample of some pre-packaged ones and they were great. But there is no way I would shell out snack food prices for .1 ounce of nori!
Yum! Thanks for sharing. :)
I can't imagine this would be anything less than AWESOME. :)
i LOOOOVE!!!!
These are great! My 10 and 7 year old boys loved them and they are pretty picky. They said it tasted like popcorn. I would have to agree.
My kids can eat whole packages of the Trader Joe's version of these in one sitting (your moniker definitely fits!), and I'm not into all that canola oil (or, worse yet, the corn oil in the Costco version). Also not so into the idea of nori from the sea around Fukushima these days, as it contains incredible amounts of iodine. So, I had to try this with some nori I'd had sitting around for a while (from Japan, pre-March 2011) and give it a go. Unfortunately, it burned--has anyone else had this happen? I did notice some smoking from a previously-burned spill on the floor of the oven, maybe that was part of it, but the seaweed itself was definitely overdone. I did find a Korean BBQ site which says to do this at 300F for 5 minutes; I think I'll try that next time, with some nori from Maine. Thanks for the idea!
Seaweed Crack indeed! I just made four sheets and sprayed Bragg's Liquid Aminos over the oil before sprinkling the sesame seeds. These are to die for. And yes, I ate all four sheets before the pans were even cool. Thank you!
