iHerb giveaway winners & October SOS Kitchen Challenge Round up

We couldn't be more pleased with the incredible array of entries we received for this month's SOS Kitchen Challenge on sesame seeds!  As always, your creativity and versatility the kitchen are awe-inspiring.

We received 35 entries--the best turn out yet!--all of them inventive, delicious and sesame-packed! From noodles to omelets to salads, the savory side of the challenge was well represented.  I was in awe of Kris's chickpea flour omelet--doesn't it look great? And how about this Caprese-inspired Japanese Tomato Tofu Salad? I also loved this Zatter Casserole and Sesame Roasted Eggplant with Rice Pilaf.

And the sweet sesame treats were over the top! From beverages to cookies and more, you all outdid yourselves this month.  One of the most innovative sweets, I thoughts, was this Warm Maple Sesame Drink from Maid in Alaska.  I also loved the look of these Sesame Seed Cookies with Maple Tahini Icing, Chocolate Tahini Cookies, and Grain Free Gingerbread Cutouts, and two types of tahini bars! Finally, don't the Sesame Chocolate Pudding and raw Sweet Sesame Balsamic Cashews look phenomenal, too? I could go on and on! You can check out the rest of the mouthwatering entries by clicking on the linkys, below!

Wholegrain Crackerbread with Sesame (gluten-free, vegan, ACD), my recipe calendar, and TWO giveaways

October's SOS Kitchen Challenge ingredient is sesame.  This is a really exciting challenge for Ricki and me, because we are being sponsored this month by iHerb. They are offering 1 pound bags of sesame seeds to the first 10 readers who submit recipes and set up an account with them, and at the end of the month we will draw a name for a $50 iHerb shopping spree. Pretty awesome, right? Head over to this month's kick-off post to read all the rules and details, then submit a recipe to the Linky.  You have until October 31 to submit a recipe, but if you want to be one of the lucky winners of a bag of sesame seeds, do it soon!  {NOTE: THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED}

The other big news is that my recipe calendar, entitled A Year to Eat Freely: 2011 Allergy-Friendly Recipe Calendar, is now for sale! Doesn't it look lovely? This 12-month recipe calendar features 17 recipes free of all major allergens, with full color photos and lots of good instructions. Read more about it here, or just go over to my Etsy shop. I have decided to share a lovely recipe from the calendar as part of this month's event, a wonderful Wholegrain Crackerbread with Sesame that is easy to prepare and delicious.  I love these crackers because they are truly a whole foods product - simply cooked buckwheat or quinoa grains, buckwheat flour, sesame seeds, olive oil, salt, and water.  So simple, and yet so delicious. They are crispy and crunchy, perfect for eating with dips, soups, salads, or nut butters.  The recipe is featured in the calendar with Smoky Zucchini Dip, one of my favorite recipes (and photos!) from the project.  Hopefully it works as a little teaser to tempt you to buy one. ;)

October SOS Kitchen Challenge Reveal and a Special Surprise...

October brings many wonderful things, like mashed sweet potatoes, beautiful golden leaves, and all the fun of Halloween. I love fall and all that comes with it!  With one exception: the next season. Winter makes me frown.  As someone living in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where it isn't uncommon to walk to the bus in -15º F temperatures, I dread the coming of winter. My SOS co-host Ricki, from Diet,Dessert, and Dogs has similar sentiments about the snowy season. In an attempt to mitigate the impending chill this October, we present you with another Sweet or Savory Kitchen Challenge--this time, with a special twist.  So read on, learn about our latest key ingredient, and join in on the fun!

Now, you've most likely heard or read about at least one of the "superfood" seeds currently being touted all over the internet: flax, chia, hemp.  And while all three are wonderfully nutritious and offer all manner of health benefits, they sometimes overshadow the more common specimens that are equally healthy in their own right.  This month, we're focusing on one of those better-known seeds...
